Peniche, on the coast of Portugal between Lisbon and Porto, is the most famous of Portugals fishing ports. Peniche accounts for a large proportion of the nations catches and consequently, there are many fine fish restaurants along the streets and lanes in Peniche The thought of going to a fishing port for your annual vacation might not appeal too much until you discover the wonderful coastline and the long sandy beaches .
Many Portuguese have their holidays during July and August in Peniche on the Silver Coast and quite a few end up sunbathing on those beautiful beaches that stretch between Peniche and Baleal.
It goes without saying that Peniche is not the only popular town on the Silver Coast, there are many excellent resorts. However, the dunes and the soft golden sands attract swimmers, walkers, anglers, sun worshippers and most famously, surfers to the fabulous Silver Coast.
The surf along the Silver Coast is world famous and indeed the shorelines of Peniche have been host to Euopean heats of the Rip Curl championships for years, but more recently the world record wave surfed by Garrett Macnamara at Nazare has become a youtube sensation and all the more reason to pack your surfing equipment and head off to the Silver Coast.
Peniche is a well loved fishing port and holiday resort and hand in hand with the superb beaches it also has boat trips to Balenga Island, (which is a great day out,) incredible coastline that is every bit as dramatic as Cornwall, and of course the obligatory Intermarche for all your groceries.
There is a truly enourmous choice of rentals and other accommodation inside and close to Peniche to give you the opportunity to be closer to the action. But you could always stay in a quieter location in cheap bed and breakfast for example and of course villas, apartments and hotels.
There are bound to be a many holiday-makers in Peniche during the traditional summer months, and sometimes off-peak at weekends too when the weather is warm enough for the locals to come out, but if you decide to book your holiday for the less popular months like June, September or October then you are still likely to experience terrific weather conditions and thanfully, less crowded beaches...of course if you like the noise and mayhem of bustling beaches, then arrange your break for July and August. Although it is bond to be more expensive the overall holiday feel is obviously greater and excitement is higher.
